I’m a little short on time this week. The calendar has been full. A retreat course I lead for seminarians is on the horizon tonight and on into tomorrow.
I’ll share this encouraging word below. This was featured in the seminary newsletter today. We’re at the midterm. You might not be at the midterm. But you may find yourself in circumstances that feel like midterms.
Keep going.
Book Notes
Still reading Chernow’s Washington.
I continue reading David Foster Wallace’s encyclopedic novel Infinite Jest. I’ll read this in the afternoon during the retreat tomorrow.
I’m reading a galley of Richard Foster’s forthcoming book Lessons in Humility (almost done!) and am still working my way through Jacques Ellul’s Humiliation of the Word. I’m also reading Andrew Root’s Faith Formation in a Secular Age.
Sights and Sounds
A couple of weeks ago I forgot to mention that I watched Rookie of the Year (1993) with my son, who is playing Little League this fall. It was an enjoyable viewing.
Last Words
On the blog: the October tunes list went out, a novelist built an underground lair, and John Mark Comer is right to point out that life is hard, we need a way, and that way is Jesus.
Before I go, standard copy.

Hit play on the tape with the appeal for social media followers, then: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. I’ve thought about shutting all these down.
I’m not checking those accounts, but content does push there. If you use social media as your news feed, follow there. Share my stuff, if you like. Maybe those services are for you. They are not for me. I’ve been a happier and less anxious person since I quit checking social media.
Publishers consider social media numbers when extending offers or invites to write. Likes, follows, etc. help a person like me make their way. Lastly, subscribe to the blog by submitting your email to the "Updates to Your Inbox" form in the sidebar. We're at 1,392 across platforms. Help me get to 1,500+.
That's the business.

Be well this week. Bless others.

P.S. - I write notes. I write one to Molly every week. I’ve done that for the past six years. I write my kids once a month. And I write myself a letter every month that delivers one month from the day that I wrote it. I write notes.
